DAISY Researcher Máté Fischer to Speak at International Webinar on Degrowth and Doughnut Economics

On 21 October 2026, Máté Fischer will participate as a speaker in the international webinar “Doughnut Economics for Cities and Regions: What Indicators for Maximum Impact?”, organised by the Doughnut Coalition Hamburg and the Swiss Donut Economics Network as part of Global Donut Days.

How can cities and regions measure progress towards a socially just and ecologically sustainable future? This question will be at the heart of an upcoming international webinar featuring Máté Fischer, a researcher at GreenFormation Kft., co-coordinator of the DAISY project.

The event will bring together European researchers and practitioners to discuss how cities and regions can develop meaningful sustainability indicators that go beyond conventional economic growth and support long-term social and ecological well-being.

Bringing the Degrowth Perspective into the Discussion

Máté Fischer is a PhD candidate at Corvinus University of Budapest and a researcher at GreenFormation Kft. He is actively involved in the Hungarian research activities of the DAISY project, particularly those focusing on degrowth and the Budapest Degrowth Doughnut (BDD) initiative.

During the webinar, Máté will share insights into degrowth as an alternative approach to urban sustainability, exploring how cities can move beyond growth-oriented development models towards strategies that respect ecological boundaries while ensuring social justice and well-being.

His contribution will draw on experiences from the Budapest Degrowth Doughnut initiative, which combines the principles of Doughnut Economics with a participatory approach to developing locally relevant sustainability indicators.

Connecting the Webinar to DAISY’s Research

The Budapest Degrowth Doughnut is one of the case studies examined within the DAISY project. Developed by researchers at Corvinus University of Budapest in collaboration with GreenFormation, the initiative provides a framework for understanding how Budapest can move towards a socially just and environmentally sustainable future.

The framework integrates ecological, social, economic and cultural indicators, developed through participatory processes involving researchers, municipal representatives and civil society stakeholders.

In 2024, the Budapest Degrowth Doughnut was incorporated into Budapest’s Climate City Contract, demonstrating how alternative economic approaches and participatory research can contribute to urban sustainability policies.

Within DAISY, the research builds on these achievements by exploring how the framework can further integrate biodiversity considerations, ecological restoration and nature connectivity into urban sustainability strategies.

Máté’s participation in the webinar offers an opportunity to share experiences from this research with an international audience and contribute to discussions on how sustainability indicators can support transformative change in European cities and regions.
