Indigenous women in Melanesia are trained as marine scientists and divers, leading locally governed reef conservation and marine protected areas.
Transformation
Operating across the personal, practical and political spheres, it changes perceptions of women’s roles, equips women to conduct marine research and enables them to influence community marine governance. Combining scientific and Indigenous knowledge may transform who produces conservation knowledge and who participates in decisions about marine resources.
Equity
Creates capabilities, professional qualifications and leadership opportunities for Indigenous women who have traditionally been excluded from marine science and community decision-making. Its Indigenous women-led governance supports recognition and procedural equity.
Biodiversity
Women monitor coral and fish populations and support locally managed no-fishing zones and marine protected areas. This can improve coral-reef condition, fisheries recovery and protection of marine species.
