3 futures for Europe – but which economy delivers for both biodiversity and equity?

Economic choices shape much more than GDP. They influence how we use land and resources, who benefits from prosperity, who bears environmental costs – and ultimately what kind of future is possible for both people and nature.

Our new DAISY infographic explores three contrasting pathways.

  1. A fiscal growth economy (business as usual) continues largely along today’s trajectory: more production, more consumption and increasing pressure on ecosystems. Habitat loss, pollinator decline and resource extraction go hand in hand with rising living costs, unequal exposure to pollution and widening inequalities.
  2. A green growth economy introduces cleaner technologies, greater efficiency, circular approaches and green investment. This can reduce some environmental pressures and create new opportunities – but improvements may remain uneven, and vulnerable groups can still be left behind.
  3. A transformation economy goes further. Instead of asking only how growth can become greener, it asks how economies can deliver wellbeing within planetary boundaries. Agroecology, community energy, 15-minute cities, sharing and repair systems and participatory governance point towards a future in which reduced resource use, ecosystem recovery and greater social equity reinforce one another.

This is also a central question for the DAISY project: which combinations of social, technological, economic and governance interventions can move us beyond incremental improvements towards genuine transformation for biodiversity and equity?
