Builds a tiered, next-generation network combining genetics, satellites and field data to track biodiversity across Europe.

Context

Biodiversity monitoring today is fragmented and misses many species, especially rare or hard-to-detect ones. NextBON builds a layered system — from satellite tracking of land cover down to detailed genetic sampling in the field — to create standardised, comparable biodiversity data across Europe that supports better conservation decisions.

Main objectives

1) Build a scalable, tiered biodiversity monitoring blueprint. 2) Combine satellite imagery, genomics and field sensors. 3) Standardise data using shared protocols and FAIR principles. 4) Support EU and global biodiversity policy through comparable, high-resolution data.
