Develops and tests eco-design methods and AI tools to make footwear more durable, recyclable and sustainable.

Context

Shoes are hard to recycle and often not built to last. ECOSTEP develops a methodology and AI-based tool that measures a shoe’s environmental footprint across its whole life and helps manufacturers design footwear that lasts longer, is easier to repair, and complies with new EU sustainability rules.

Main objectives

1) Develop an AI-based eco-design and testing methodology for footwear. 2) Analyse at least six footwear products for circular-substitution potential. 3) Validate new testing methods for durability and recyclability. 4) Provide tools and training to help SMEs comply with EU ecodesign rules.
