Uses AI to speed up development of sustainable, cellulose-based flexible packaging as an alternative to plastic.

Context

Flexible plastic packaging is a big environmental problem, and better alternatives are hard to produce cheaply. PackAhead uses AI to design enzymes and optimise production of cellulose-based films that are compostable and recyclable, aiming to make this sustainable packaging affordable enough to compete with plastic.

Main objectives

1) Use AI to accelerate enzyme design for cellulose film production. 2) Demonstrate cost-effective, high-performance packaging at pilot scale. 3) Ensure compliance with new EU packaging waste rules. 4) Plan commercial deployment and scale-up by 2032.
