The open ocean provides food, regulates climate and supports huge food webs, but new and existing human activities threaten it in ways scientists don’t fully understand. OceanSOS studies these threats through fieldwork and modelling, and adapts the ‘planetary boundaries’ concept to help decision-makers manage the ocean more safely.
1) Map new and existing threats to ocean food webs over time. 2) Assess ecological and economic impacts of these threats. 3) Extend the Planetary Boundaries framework to the open ocean. 4) Provide decision-makers with tools for safer ocean governance and share findings with the public.
