Transformation
Operating primarily across the practical and political spheres, it turns mangrove conservation into a community-governed economic and development model. It changes who manages and benefits from coastal resources and has inspired other community blue-carbon projects. Personal transformation may also arise through increased awareness, skills and identification as environmental stewards.
Equity
Carbon revenue finances shared community services, while residents participate in restoration, governance and decisions about local benefits. The project reports including women and people with disabilities.
Biodiversity
Protects mangroves containing all nine Kenyan mangrove species and restores degraded areas. Mangroves support fish nurseries, coastal biodiversity, carbon storage and protection from erosion and storms.
